An exceptional rendering of the Mount Argaios
Lot 1483
CAPPADOCIA. Caesaraea-Eusebia. Septimius Severus, 193-211. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 3.16 g, 12 h), RY 5 = 196/7. ΑΥ Λ CЄΠ CЄΟΥΗΡΟC Laureate head of Septimius Severus to right. Rev. ΜΗΤΡΟΠΟ ΚΑΙCAPI / ЄΤ Є Mount Argaios surmounted by star. Ganschow -, cf. 383 (differing obverse legend, but see illustration 725). Sydenham, Caesarea, -. An extremely rare variety. Well struck and with and excellent portrait, and magnificent reverse details. Extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The level of detail on the reverse side of this wonderful drachm is astonishing: one can see not only the rocky slopes of the 3917-meter-high Argaios with its central snowfield but also a single tree in front of the mountain massif, which must have had religious significance.
